Redcliffs School site selection and acquisition
Client: Ministry of Education
Following the 2011 earthquakes and subsequent cliff collapse and debris inundation on and above parts of the school, Redcliffs School was relocated to van Asch Deaf Education Centre in Sumner, Christchurch.
From early 2015 to late 2016, consultation was undertaken about the future of the school. The decision was made by the Minister of Education (MoE) to relocate the school to an alternative site in Redcliffs.
MoE engaged TPG to undertake the site selection process to determine the best site to facilitate Redcliffs School returning to their community.
Following site selection, we completed the successful acquisition of the site with negotiations between MoE, Christchurch City Council and the Department of Conservation for the exchange and purchase of land for construction of the new school. This involved extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including the Redcliffs’ School Board of Trustees to ensure the site was secured and the construction programme could commence in a timely manner.
NZ Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern opened the school on 25 June 2020.
